The three roles or projections you may exhibit..
- Villain (or Persecutor) - the one who blames, criticizes, or controls.
- Victim - the one who feels powerless, oppressed, or mistreated.
- Hero (or Rescuer) - the one who tries to save or fix others.
This trio comes from the Karpman Drama Triangle, a model used in psychology, coaching, and leadership development.
Here’s how they play out:
- The Victim feels “done to.”
- The Villain/Persecutor does the “doing.”
- The Hero/Rescuer steps in to “save” the victim — often reinforcing the cycle rather than solving it.
In leadership, these projections can appear as patterns in how people take responsibility (or avoid it):
- A leader as a Villain blames and controls.
- A leader as a Victim feels burdened or helpless.
- A leader as a Hero over-functions, rescuing instead of empowering.
