You have been overpaying for twenty years. Not because you could not afford wholesale rates. Because you never asked if they existed.
The difference was the layer they were booking through. Wholesale access versus retail price. You are not a victim of travel pricing. You are a volunteer. Every time you refresh booking .com instead of asking why the price feels wrong, you are choosing to stay in the retail layer.
