This may be uncomfortable to hear, but it needs to be said. Just because people in your church carry a firearm… does NOT mean your church is actually secure. In fact, without a clear plan and proper training, it can sometimes create more risk instead of less. Every Sunday families walk into church expecting a safe place to worship. Parents drop their kids off in the children’s ministry. Grandparents sit down in the pews. Visitors walk in for the first time. They trust the church has thought through their safety. But here’s the reality I see far too often when speaking with churches: Good people are willing to step up and protect their church… Yet many teams don’t have: • A clear written security plan • Defined roles if something happens • Communication protocols during an emergency • De-escalation training for disruptive situations • Legal awareness of what volunteers can and cannot do And when those pieces are missing, even well-intentioned people can find themselves unprepared in a critical moment. This isn’t about fear. It’s about responsibility. If you attend a church, serve as an usher, greeter, pastor, or on a safety team, here’s an important question: Do you actually know if your church has a real security plan… or are people just hoping nothing ever happens?
