I’ve been making and working on films off and on for the last 8 years. It’s clear to me, who you know has made the biggest difference. As Courtney said, pay less attention to having the right equipment or getting that one perfect role, instead make stuff, do stuff, and meet others that are doing what you do.
If you make connections and talk about what you love, others will see that, and invite you to be part of their projects. Better yet, make something unique with them instead of waiting for some else to ask you to join them.
I’ve made a lot of friends where I used to live in the Central Coast, and now that I’m in LA I’m doing it all over again. I’m volunteering to work on set on smaller projects and following up with the cast and crew to hang out or just grab a coffee. Finding out what makes them happy and what their story is. Sharing that kind of information with them too lays the path for them to know how you can fit into possible other projects they have coming up, and visa versa.
I’m thrilled to see spaces like this, created to educate, help us all merge as one force, and bring out the talent in us all.
I look forward to seeing what we all create.
