Personal Accountability the Secret to Positive Wellbeing
Personal accountability - the secret ingredient to personal growth and wellbeing.
Personal accountability empowers each one of us to take control of our own growth and allows us to start to create our own sense of well-being. It also enables us to expand and live the lives that we truly want for ourselves. So, it really is a powerful thing.
For me the key here is that by embracing it, it really can radically shift your growth your expansion and your well-being. So, we'll explore what accountability really is why it's often avoided and how it becomes a powerful ally in creating lasting change in your life.
There is a definition of personal accountability which is ‘it's the conscious choice to take ownership of your thoughts your feelings your behaviours and outcomes” and it's not about blaming yourself, being guilty, being a perfectionist it's about self-empowerment and self-agency. it's like that saying you are the creator of your own destiny, you are the driver of your own life, and accountability is the steering wheel it's not the map it's not the road but it's the tool that gives you directional control.
So why do we avoid accountability?
There are common reasons why this might happen, sometimes taking ownership means you are really being accountable and maybe we have a fear of failure or being seen to be doing something wrong. Taking full ownership of our actions, behaviours, thoughts and feelings requires an element of self-discipline and courage. It is really saying this is me and I’m not perfect but I am willing to have these experiences and learn from my mistakes.
So, it's important to step into that place of being able to look at any given situation and look at both the things that went well and the things that could have gone better. Then its about the self-reflection, and saying “OK that's happened what can I do about that.” By doing this it brings the question back to yourself and what you might be able to do to support yourself and how you might be able to do things differently next time around.
If we look to authority for guidance this can cause us to lose that sense of autonomy and in turn we lose that sense of our own accountability. Although avoiding accountability might feel safer in the short term, long term what that does is it robs us of our sense of feeling in control of our lives. When we don't take accountability, we give-away the pen that writes the story of our life. If you want to put it that way, it's therefore about making that conscious choice to write your own story.
Begin to look at how personal accountability might be able to fuel your growth, expansion and wellbeing. Are there particular aspects of your life that you are not taking fully responsibility for at the moment? What's one thing you could do today to change that?
