How do I get a job?
As a recent graduate or someone who has been looking for a job for a while, to get a job we need to be prepared and ready. We will delve deeper into each during our time together in this community.
Research - look for a job that suits your qualifications or you feel you can apply to as you may still get it by winning the interviewer(s) over.
CV and Cover Letter - Tailor make this to each place you apply to, it may take time, however, it will be worth it as it shows that you made an effort to research the company.
Networking - attend events that are in your industry, or just share what you do in the right context, you never know who might be looking for someone to fill a position they have.
LinkedIn profile - This is a platform where you can learn from others, network and seek job opportunities that are advertised.
Interview preparation - When you are called for the interview, it's important to know details about the location and requirements for the interview. It is important to know where the interview will take place so that you can plan your commute and arrive early. If you are not given a dress code, dress formally, you don't get a second chance to make a first impression. Research the company where you are being interviewed for and write any questions you may have on your notebook which you can asked when offered the chance to share your any that you have. Say thank you to those who interview and be polite to anyone you met during your time at the interview.
Professional Development - take a paid or free course to learn a skill or remind yourself of information that you may have forgotten. Youtube is also a great tool as there are a number of full courses provided for free as videos. A number may be over an hour long and may not give a certificate, however, you may be able to apply what you learn and build a portfolio of projects you have completed. Some employers may be more impressed by your seeing your actually work than only being told. This can also be seen evidence of your knowledge. A warning to try and be as specific as you can in choosing a course that will be beneficial and not just for the sake as it may take up time doing something useful. You can still take a course in something that interests you as it is always good to be a life long learner.
Resilience - this is not an easy thing to develop, some people may already have it, however, most have to endure a lot of rejection notices, business and side hustles that don't work out, obstacles that seem to come out of nowhere and people who fail to come through on their word. It can be disappointing and discouraging but take heart, keep going. Keep applying and hoping knowing that there is still another opportunity ahead, tomorrow. Another aspect for resilience is when you have to work in a place where you may not like but bills have to be paid. Again, keep going, sometimes in life we have to do what we don't want to do. Thank God that you have an income as there are many who do not have. Tell yourself you 'get' to go to work at [company name] rather than I have to work at [company name].
Job boards and other resources - physical and online job boards are helpful, however, also be careful as some people may be scammers. Most places will not charge you for an interview so remember that could be a way of being conned. Places to look include: LinkedIn.com, gumtree.com, your local Craigslist website, fuzu.com on company websites in the 'vacancies' or job section. Job boards can also be physically on the inside or outside of a building. Write other places where people can check for jobs in the comments. Remember to not the details for the job, e.g. correct spelling of the email or person to address the email/letter to. Also note the deadline to avoid wasting time applying to a job when it has expired.
I hope this information has helped!
That's it for now, I hope this has been helpful. Till the next post!
