If you’re in the spring of 11th grade and feeling stuck or behind—you are not alone.
The next few months are critical, though. Here’s a clear plan to focus your energy—so you enter application season with a strategy, not chaos.
❗Quick Note: It’s tempting to jump straight into essays, but this early work is what really shapes your application and guides your essays. Get these right first, and the writing will be much stronger (summer is the real essay writing "season"!)
✅ 6 Key Priorities for May
1️⃣ Prioritize Academics
📝 Your junior year transcript is really important. Finish strong, and plan to take the most rigorous courses you can handle in senior year—focus on subjects tied to your intended major.
2️⃣ Test Prep & Scheduling 📊
- Haven’t taken SAT/ACT yet? Register ASAP for a spring or early summer test.
- Already tested? Review whether a retake could strengthen your profile (aim to finish by August).
- International students: Double-check TOEFL/IELTS policies at your target schools.
- 💡 Even if applying test-optional, having scores can expand your options.
3️⃣ Build Depth in Your Activities 💪
Now is the time to refine, not expand. Admissions officers don’t want a long list—they want to see commitment, growth, and impact in your key focus areas. Ask yourself:
- What are my top 2–3 activities that best reflect my interests and strengths?
- Where can I take on leadership or create tangible outcomes (projects, events, awards)? This summer is an excellent opportunity for Passion Projects!
- Am I telling a clear story through these choices—or is it scattered?
📌 If you're unsure how to prioritize your focus, see my posts on Application Narrative (linked below).
4️⃣ Clarify Your Application Narrative — your "tagline" 🖇️
Your Application Narrative is the backbone of your strategy—it’s the thread that ties your academics, activities, and essays together into a cohesive picture. Reflect on:
- What's your academic and extracurricular focus (and your strengths)?
- How does your story connect to your future goals (major / minor, even career)?
- 📌 Again, see my posts on Application Narrative (linked below).
5️⃣ Letters of Recommendation 📩
Aim to ask your teachers by the end of this semester—before summer. This gives them time to write thoughtful letters. Prioritize teachers who:
- Have taught you recently (Grade 11)
- One science teacher & one humanities teacher
- Know you well and can comment on your growth
- Teach in core subjects (Math, Science, English, History, Foreign Language)
- 💬 See specifics in my post series on rec letters (links below).
6️⃣ Start Your School List & Research 🔍
Begin tracking colleges in a spreadsheet:
- Add basic info (location, size, majors, deadlines) & why each school appeals to you
- Include admit rates and average stats to spot Reach/Target/Safety
- 📌 I’ll be sharing my School Research Spreadsheet + a full guide soon!
- ❗Note: This is an ongoing process for next few months, so begin now and build gradually!
