1๏ธโƒฃ US Applications 101: ๐Ÿ“ WHAT You Need to Submit!
๐Ÿ’ก Applying to U.S. colleges? The process can seem overwhelming, but when broken down step by step, itโ€™s completely manageable! Hereโ€™s exactly what goes into your application and where youโ€™ll submit everything.
๐Ÿ“ Where Do You Submit Your Application?
Most U.S. colleges use one of these platforms:
โœ… Common App (900+ schools) โ€“ The most widely used platform. You fill out one application and customize essays for each school.
โœ… Coalition App (250+ schools) โ€“ Similar to Common App but less common.
โœ… UC Application (University of California system) โ€“ Separate platform.
โœ… Individual School Portals โ€“ few schools have their own portals, e g MIT & Georgetown
๐Ÿ’ก Most students use Common App + a few school-specific portals.
๐Ÿ“ What Goes Into a U.S. College Application?
All applications include 6 key components, which are entered into the platforms above:
1๏ธโƒฃ Background & Personal Information
๐Ÿ“Œ Basic details (name, school, citizenship, family info).
2๏ธโƒฃ Academic Records (Transcripts & Test Scores, if applicable)
๐Ÿ“Œ Transcripts: Your school counselor submits these directly (you donโ€™t upload them yourself).
๐Ÿ“Œ Test Scores (if required): Sent via testing agencies (SAT, ACT, AP, IB, A-Levels, TOEFL/IELTS).
๐Ÿ“Œ Many schools are test-optionalโ€”meaning SAT/ACT isnโ€™t required.
3๏ธโƒฃ Extracurricular Activities & Honors ๐Ÿ†
๐Ÿ“Œ Common App Activities Section (10 slots): Clubs, sports, internships, leadership, research, personal projects, family responsibilities.
๐Ÿ“Œ Common App Honors Section (5 slots): Awards & recognitions (academic, athletic, competitions, etc.).
4๏ธโƒฃ Essays (Personal & Supplemental) โœ๏ธ
๐Ÿ“Œ Personal Statement (~650 words): Required by Common App & Coalition App.
๐Ÿ“Œ Supplemental Essays (none for many State schools, up to 7+ for some Ivy Leagues): School-specific prompts ("Why this college?", "Describe an extracurricular.").
5๏ธโƒฃ Letters of Recommendation ๐Ÿ“ฉ
๐Ÿ“Œ Who to ask?
โœ”๏ธ 1 counselor letter (required by most schools).
โœ”๏ธ 1-2 teacher recommendations (core subjects from your junior year).
โœ”๏ธ Optional: Extra letter (coach, mentor, research supervisor, employer).
๐Ÿ“Œ How to submit? Teachers/counselors upload them directly through Common App or school portals.
6๏ธโƒฃ Financial Aid & Scholarships ๐Ÿ’ฐ
๐Ÿ“Œ Need-Based Aid (U.S. Citizens & Permanent Residents):
โœ” FAFSA & CSS Profile โ€“ Open Oct 1 (deadlines typically Nov-Feb of your senior year)
๐Ÿ“Œ International Students: Some schools offer need-based financial aid, others only merit scholarships (deadlines typically Nov-Feb).
๐Ÿ“Œ External Scholarships (deadlines typically Oct-Jan)
๐Ÿšซ Common Misconceptions About Submission Requirements
โŒ "I should upload a resume." โ†’ Nope! Most colleges do not require or accept resumes unless specifically requested. Instead, your activities & honors section covers this information.
โŒ โ€œI upload my own transcripts.โ€ โ†’ Incorrect! Your school counselor submits your transcript directlyโ€”students donโ€™t upload them.
โŒ โ€œI can apply first and figure out financial aid later.โ€ โ†’ Wrong! Some schools wonโ€™t consider you for aid if you miss their aid/scholarship deadlines.
