💡 "Should I just apply to Ivy League schools and hope for the best?" Nope! A smart school list is about balance and strategy to maximize your chances while keeping strong options open.
Step 1: How Many Schools Should You Apply To?
I recommend applying to 12–15 schools, split into:
✔️ 15–20% Dream Schools (2–3 schools)
✔️ 25–35% Reach Schools (3–4 schools)
✔️ 35–40% Target Schools (4–5 schools)
✔️ 15–20% Safety Schools (2–3 schools)
❌ Focusing too much on Dream and Reach schools is very risky—without solid Target and Safety options, you could end up with no offers, despite months of hard application work 😩
Step 2: How Do You Know Which Category a School Falls Into? 🔍
Your Dream, Reach, Target, and Safety schools are based on how your academic profile (GPA, SAT/ACT, coursework, extracurriculars) compares to admitted students’ stats at each school.
📍 Dream Schools: "Reach for the stars"–very unlikely, but not impossible
✔️ Either has an acceptance rate of <10–15% OR your stats fall below their 25th percentile.
📌 Example: Harvard, Stanford, MIT. Even with a 4.0 GPA & 1600 SAT, admission is NOT guaranteed.
🔑 Takeaway: These require exceptional applications AND lots of luck!
📍 Reach Schools: Less likely than not, but possible
✔️ If your stats are at the lower end of the middle 50% range of admitted students.
📌 Example: If a school’s SAT range is 1400–1480 and you have a 1400, it’s a Reach.
🔑 Takeaway: Strong application narrative, essays & extracurriculars can make a big difference here.
📍 Target Schools: A strong, realistic shot
✔️ Your stats align closely or ar slightly above the middle 50% of admitted students.
📌 Example: If your GPA is 3.8 and the school’s average is 3.7, it’s a Target.
🔑 Takeaway: These should be schools you love and feel confident about.
📍 Safety Schools: Likely to get in (but never guaranteed!)
✔️ Your stats are well above their averages.
📌 Example: If your SAT is 1350 and the school’s average is 1250, it’s a Safety.
🔑 Key Takeaway: Always choose Safety schools you’d actually be happy to attend.
Step 3: Can Your Essays & Extracurriculars Change a School’s Category? 🎭
YES! Strong essays and application strategy can lift a Reach to a Target or a Target to a near-Safety, even if your stats aren’t perfect.💡 How?
✔️ A compelling application narrative that ties everything together.
✔️ Standout essays that add depth & personality to your profile.
✔️ A cohesive extracurricular story that highlights leadership & impact.
✔️ Applying Early Decision (ED) or Early Action (EA)—which boosts your chances.
🔑 Key Takeaway: Admissions isn’t just about stats. Strategy matters
