Be Willing to Stand Out
As I meditated on turning 60 yesterday, I remembered when I was in my 30s and 40s—how bold I was. Unapologetic. Unfiltered. Willing to take risks and speak my mind without second-guessing myself.
But somewhere along the way, I became more of a complicit conformist. I didn't even realize it was happening. I became conditioned to fit in rather than stand out. To play it safe rather than take up space. To blend rather than be seen.
Somehow, turning a year older shifted something in me.
Today, I did my first live TikTok. I know there are "specific ways" to do it—rules, strategies, formulas that everyone swears by. But I said, "The best way to learn is to just do it." Because here's the truth: we're living in a society that says, "Be yourself… but make sure you're like us." And that? That's complicity. That's conformity dressed up as freedom.
And for the midlife woman? Complicity has not gotten us very far.
Now, I'm not saying I'm just going to step out and break the law or create my own reckless rules. But I do plan to continue finding the woman I thought I lost. I intend to present myself in a whole new way—one that may not be the norm for those who think they get to determine what "normal" is. But it will be at my pace and with the grace that characterizes me best.
I'm ready to let my presence stand out, rather than blend in.
Because here's what I've learned: there is a presence we all carry that's not like anyone else. It's not supposed to be duplicated, diluted, or domesticated. It's supposed to be distinct. It's supposed to be you.
So let's stop trying to shrink ourselves to make others comfortable. Let's stop apologizing for taking up space. Let's learn to embrace who we've become—not who others expect us to be.
