Happy Introduction Week at The Healthy Coop Collective! Today's topic is one of my favorites because it combines science with creativity - keeping our flocks happy and healthy during the cold winter months.
š”ļø Why Winter Treats Matter (The Science Part)
Winter presents unique challenges for our flocks:
š„¶Increased caloric needs - chickens burn more energy staying warm
š„¶Reduced foraging opportunities - frozen ground limits natural behaviors
š„¶Behavioral enrichment becomes critical - boredom can lead to pecking and other welfare issues
š„¶Mental stimulation - keeps birds active and engaged during shorter days
ā
What Makes a GOOD Winter Treat?
šProvide extra calories/energy for cold weather
šEncourage natural foraging behaviors
šKeep birds active and mentally stimulated
šMake up no more than 10% of daily diet (to maintain balanced nutrition)
šBe safe and digestible
š« Quick Safety Reminder
Before we dive into favorites, remember these foods are TOXIC to chickens:
š¤¢Avocado (skin and pit)
š¤¢Chocolate
š¤¢Raw or dried beans
š¤¢Green potatoes or tomatoes
š¤¢Onions and garlic in large amounts
š¤¢Moldy or spoiled foods
š¤¢Salty or sugary processed foods
šÆ My Winter Treat Ideas:
High-Energy Options:
š£Scratch grains - feeding in late afternoon to provide overnight energy
š£Whole corn - metabolizes slowly, creating warmth overnight
š£Black oil sunflower seeds - high fat and protein
Activity-Based Enrichment:
šCabbage/lettuce hanging - encourages jumping and pecking
šSprouted grains - provides fresh greens when pasture is unavailable
šTreat blocks - compressed seeds and grains that take time to consume
šWarm oatmeal - warm (not hot) foods on very cold mornings
š¤ Now Here's Where I Need YOUR Expertise!
I want to hear about YOUR experiences because real-world knowledge:
1. What's your flock's FAVORITE winter treat? (The one that makes them come running every time!)
2. Do you have a special "recipe" or way of presenting treats? (Hanging feeders? Frozen blocks? Warm mashes?)
3. Have you noticed any treats that seem to keep them busier longer? (Winter days are long - what keeps them entertained?)
4. Any treats you THOUGHT would be a hit but flopped? (Let's learn from each other's experiments!)
5. What's your go-to treat when temperatures DROP below freezing?
š Bonus Discussion Questions:
āDo your chickens prefer warm treats or room temperature in winter?
āHas anyone tried making DIY seed blocks? How did it go?
āDo different breeds seem to prefer different treats?
āWhat's the most creative winter enrichment activity you've seen or tried?
