🐾 What Kitten Grooming Should Consist Of – Step by Step in the Salon 🐾
At The Cat Grooming Academy, kitten grooming is about desensitisation, trust, and setting the kitten up for life — not about achieving a perfect groom.
This is how kitten grooming should be approached in a professional salon environment.
🐱 1. Arrival & Settling In
Before any tools are introduced:
  • Allow the kitten time to observe and settle
  • Gentle handling only
  • No restraint or rushing
  • Constant observation of body language
This stage determines how much can realistically be achieved.
🪮 2. Gentle Brushing & Combing
  • Use a soft brush or fine comb
  • Light pressure, short strokes
  • Start on easy areas like the back and sides
  • Never pull through knots
This is about familiarity with tools, not coat perfection.
💅 3. Nail Trim
  • One paw at a time
  • Calm, minimal handling
  • Remove only the sharp tip
  • Pause between paws if needed
Even trimming a few nails is a win at this stage.
✂️ 4. Light Sanitary Tidy (If Needed)
Only if the kitten is relaxed and the coat allows:
  • Minimal trimming around hygiene areas
  • No close clipping
  • Stop immediately if stress appears
Many kittens won’t need this early on — and that’s completely appropriate.
👂 5. Ear & Face Familiarisation
  • Gentle touching around ears and face
  • Visual ear check only
  • No deep cleaning unless medically necessary
This helps normalise handling of sensitive areas.
🚿 6. Bath (Only If Appropriate)
Not every kitten needs a bath on their first visit.
If suitable:
  • Warm water and calm handling
  • Kitten-safe shampoo
  • Slow, steady movements
  • Continuous reassurance
Sometimes just wetting paws or legs is enough for an introduction.
💨 7. Drying & Noise Introduction
  • Towel dry first
  • Introduce dryer at a distance
  • Low noise and airflow
  • Stop if stress increases
Dryer tolerance often takes several visits and should never be forced.
🧠 8. Knowing When to Stop
This is the most important part of kitten grooming.
Success means:
  • Stopping before fear or panic
  • Ending on a calm note
  • Leaving the kitten confident for next time
Not finishing everything is often the most professional decision.
🐾 The Aim of Kitten Grooming
Kitten grooming should build:
  • Confidence
  • Trust
  • Calm handling
  • Lifelong grooming tolerance
Especially for long-haired kittens, correct early grooming prevents severe matting, stress, and traumatic grooms later in life.
Slow. Gentle. Respectful
