🐾 Introducing Kittens to Grooming – Joseph’s Story 🐾
Before Christmas, I rescued a kitten called Joseph. He was around 4 months old and had never been groomed. By the time he came into my care, his coat was severely matted and he was carrying fleas. For his comfort and welfare, he needed a lion cut and a flea bath immediately.
Joseph’s situation is unfortunately something we still see far too often — particularly in long-haired kittens, where coats can mat very quickly without regular grooming. At just a few months old, matting can already become painful and restrictive, leaving no humane option other than a full clip.
🐱 The ideal age to start grooming is around 8–12 weeks old, once a kitten is settled and feeling safe. Early grooming should always be short and gentle: light brushing, handling paws and face, and getting used to being on a table. It’s about building familiarity, not perfection.
When grooming is delayed, kittens like Joseph can end up needing drastic grooming measures that could have been avoided — especially in breeds such as Persian and other long-coated cats. Joseph is now comfortable, mat-free, and slowly learning that grooming can be calm and safe. His story is a powerful reminder of why early introduction isn’t optional for long-haired kittens — it’s essential.
