Are you maybe curious what a week looks like when burlesque is your full time job? Maybe this is a life you want to live one day, maybe it IS the life you already live. Or you're just a kid taking a sneak peek 😉
Either way... welcome to my week!
First things first: if you wanna really dive in, check the attached file. That's a screenshot of my calendar this week I'm writing this post.
💖 Now, what is there to see, at a glance?
As a solopreneur - like almost everyone living off burlesque - you have a pretty convoluted calendar: it will have your personal things as well as your shows and in my case, my studio hours all there. Nothing like "home & work" - these things are all mixed up together, and add to it it's my absolute passion, when you see free slots we are actually talking "chill time" which is usually me watching burlesque videos, reading about burlesque history or just practicing for myself. Add to the mixture I live across the street from my studio (I know, such luxury, much comfort 😆), things blend in beautifully.
💖 Time is a construct.
My days are very long - if you look at the beginning of the week, I start as early as I get up - around 10am - and I go until around 9pm. Now, if you are a creative, this is VERY important.
Creatives, creators, visionaries, artists, engineers, inventors, etc. We need time blocking. We need to "get in the zone". I don't do my best work when I have to change my task every hour (if you are a manager, that's actually how you thrive). I need to start off at around 10ish and let me mind wander. Deep dive into the books I'm reading, the topic I'm studying. Get lost into the choreography I am creating, and not worry about the outside world. And you gotta keep your phone out of this.
➡️ This is work time that moves you forward.
Without these, you don't create anything. Without these, you don't solve a problem. You don't create quality content. You create superficial choreography.
💖 Admin is necessary.
Oh boy, did I use to struggle with this one. You can see a long yellow block in my calendar on Fridays. That is for admin work. Mostly, it's about getting my finances in order, paying invoices, and working my way through Profit 1st systems. Honestly, it used to be my most hated task - that's why it's on a Friday, I get to reward myself with champagne or some fine dining after 😆 and this is what I recommend you do, if you struggle with anything that you gotta get done but don't really enjoy doing - put it on a day you can do it while enjoying something else. Maybe a Saturday afternoon with your favorite TV show. Maybe a Sunday evening with whisky or hot chocolate. Associate a good thing to it and it will help!
💖 Living is even more necessary.
Art is a product of your lived experiences. Without life, there's no art. The more you live and allow yourself to experience, the more art will ooze out of you. The more you let your inner child out to play at a museum, a park, a boat, a plane, a 20's Ford, the more you lose yourself by reading a book, falling desperately in love, backpacking through the old towns in Eastern Europe, tasting the unique quiet of the views of Mt. Fuji, indulging in a death by chocolate brownie, trying something new that will lift your spirits and break your heart... you get what I mean. Sitting in a studio trying to pour out art out of an empty life won't produce your best work.
That's why you see some open slots, and if you could see my full year calendar, you'll see A LOT of trips, dinners, experiences, blank spaces when I can do whatever my heart wants to that moment.
Well, that is it! Drop any questions you may have - and let me know what your calendar looks like. Is there time for passion? Is your work lifting or crushing you? Are you home by 6pm (oh the life of a bohemian couldn't possibly fit before 6pm 😂)?
Much love (always first),
Bunny
