What’s a Vestibule? And Why More Homes Should Have One🚪
🏡 A vestibule is usually a small enclosed space in between the front door and the interior of a home. It’s basically an entryway space that separates the front door from the rest of the house, but is much smaller than a modern mudroom.
They were quite common in historical homes and I've often wondered why we stopped building vestibules into our homes.🤔
With the popularity of open concept homes, these spaces were removed from most home designs and sadly, we lost something important: a buffer between the outside world and our private living spaces.
🗝️ So, if you're designing a new home or planning a renovation, here are some of the reasons I think you should consider adding a vestibule to your plan:
✅ Increased safety: two doors instead of one adds an extra layer of security (especially helpful if you have kids or pets)
✅ Improved privacy: you can greet someone without opening your home fully
✅ Creates clear separation between public & private spaces
✅ Added storage & organization: coats, shoes, bags, umbrellas all have a place
✅ Improves energy efficiency: two doors help keep cold, heat & wind out
✅ Feels more welcoming: there’s a moment to arrive, pause & transition from the outside
✅ Better security for parcel delivery
✨Let's take a moment to appreciate how powerful this small space really is and the cozy effect it could have on your life at home 💚
