Instagram just rolled out a new feature called Instagram Map, showing your last active location in the DM inbox map. When you opt in, you can share it with followers you follow back, Close Friends, or select people. It updates that location only when you open or return to the app — no live tracking. You can also explore posts, reels, stories, or “Notes” from friends at nearby locations
How to turn it off
The feature is off by default — but if you’d rather not use it, here’s how to disable it:
- Open Instagram and tap the Map icon at the top of your DM inbox.
- Tap the settings gear in the corner.
- Select “Open Settings” to jump into your phone’s location permissions for Instagram.
- Change the setting to “Never” (iOS: Location Services → Instagram → Never; Android: App permissions → Instagram → Location → Don’t Allow) .
Alternatively, you can adjust who sees your location from the same Map settings — or simply choose to opt out entirely
