π¨ If You're Planning to Visit London β Read This First
Hey gorgeous, I need to share something that almost derailed our entire European tour before it even started.
Mum and I are weeks away from kicking off our multi-country adventure β London, Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Paris, Africa β and we almost would have been stopped at the gate without even knowing why.
Here's what saved us: a random YouTube video.
We were deep in trip planning mode when we stumbled across a video mentioning the UK's new Electronic Travel Authorization β the ETA. And I'm going to be honest with you, neither Sandra nor I had ever heard of it. Not once. And we travel full time.
So what is the UK ETA?
As of early 2025, the UK now requires US passport holders (and many other nationalities) to obtain an ETA before they travel. This is not a visa. It's a pre-entry authorization that links electronically to your passport β similar to what Australia and Canada already do.
Without it? You can be denied boarding. You don't even make it to UK passport control. The airline stops you.
Here's what you need to know:
It costs approximately $30 USD, it's applied for online, and approval can take up to 24-36 hours β so this is NOT something you do at the airport. You apply in advance. We applied and were approved in under an hour and got notified by email, but you absolutely cannot bank on that. Apply here: ππ½ https://www.gov.uk/eta/apply Why this matters so much for our community specifically:
So many of you are planning your first international trip, or your first house sit abroad, and you're already navigating a thousand moving pieces. Flights. Pet care experience. Profiles. Packing. And now there's a relatively new entry requirement that isn't showing up prominently in travel searches yet.
This is exactly the kind of thing you don't know you don't know β and that's what will stop your trip before it starts.
