Scott's mammoth story is only surpassed by his huge heart! The author of The Boy on the Log grew up in the rough and tough Gulf of Queensland's mid-western town of Mount Isa. His childhood was a challenging and uncomfortable one, but it ultimately shaped his character. In this fantastic Reading Room session, he describes his life journal and how it became a book to show others what they can achieve, emphasising that anyone can overcome adversity. From boilermaking and commercial diving to facing addiction and major financial loss—lessons that contributed to his current role as a mentor and mental health advocate, Scott's message of "consistent persistence," self-love, and the importance of understanding one’s own emotional literacy is an important one for everyone. His "fight for survival" is inspirational, and his battle with feelings of inadequacy, loneliness, and writing a book with dyslexia is raw, but he shares how, rather than pushing them down, medicating them, or seeing them as negatives, they are instrumental in growth and unique success.
