Its alkalinity simultaneously works against the acidic compounds in soap scum, neutralizing and loosening them from the surface chemically, while the abrasive texture removes them physically. This dual action is why baking soda outperforms many commercial scrubs on soap scum despite its gentle nature.
The second ingredient is dish soap. Just a few drops of ordinary dish soap added to the baking soda will provide the surfactant action that bridges the cleaned residue with the rinse water, and carry everything lifted by the baking soda cleanly away from the surface during rinsing rather than simply redistributing it. Without the surfactant, baking soda cleans effectively, but rinsing requires more water and more effort to achieve a completely clean result. With it, everything comes away in a single rinse.
The third ingredient is white vinegar, which is applied separately, after the baking soda and dish soap have done their work. It provides the acidic descaling action that addresses the mineral deposits, limescale, and hard water staining that alkaline baking soda cannot dissolve. The sequence matters. Baking soda and dish soap first for the soap scum and organic residue. Vinegar second for the mineral deposits. This is exactly what allows extended contact time with the surface.
Work the paste into the waterline ring that forms around the bathtub interior, which is the zone of highest soap scum and body oil accumulation. Use particular attention and slightly more pressure. The baking soda's abrasive action, combined with the dish soap's surfactant chemistry, addresses this zone most completely with sustained circular scrubbing. For the area around the tap base and the drain, apply a thicker layer of paste and leave it in contact for five minutes before scrubbing. This is where mineral deposits and soap scum combine into the heaviest accumulation in any bathtub.
After scrubbing the full surface with the baking soda paste, rinse thoroughly with warm water. Then spray undiluted white vinegar across the entire rinsed surface.
