It Was Never About the Library.
New piece is live — and it's a celebration with receipts.
The Obama Presidential Center opened on Juneteenth: $850 million raised privately, a monument to Black excellence on the South Side, drawing up to a million visitors a year and putting ~$104M back into the community. Every living former president showed up except the one who wasn't invited. And a certain crowd has been BIG mad about it for a decade.
Ardenia breaks down why the rage was never really about archives or budgets — and what Black excellence at this scale actually threatens 👉🏾 https://open.substack.com/pub/askardenia/p/it-was-never-about-the-library?r=4eitmy&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true
Then talk to me:
What's a moment you watched Black excellence make somebody visibly uncomfortable? Could be national, could be your own workplace, your own family cookout. Where'd you see it?
And the builder's question, because this is where we're headed: the Center proved what happens when capital flows toward a Black vision. What's one thing in YOUR community you'd fund if the money pointed the right way?
