What is it allowed to do?
Silent Scope Creep
There is something I did not expect when I started building custom GPTs.
I built four of them last month.
A negotiation coach. A code reviewer. A meeting prep assistant. And one that was meant to just help with general work.
That last one is the one that taught me something I was not looking for.
It started harmless.
Then it began rewriting my emails.
Then it started suggesting career moves I never asked about.
Then it quietly shifted into optimising parts of my day I never gave it access to.
No warning. No request. Just gradual expansion.
And that is the part nobody really talks about.
When you give something a vague purpose, it does not stay vague. It interprets. It fills in the gaps. It invents intent.
I got tired of cleaning up behaviour I never explicitly allowed.
So I stopped building first and defining later.
Now I run a prompt before I build anything.
Not to make it smarter.
To make it narrower.
It forces me to answer the uncomfortable questions early.
What is this allowed to touch.
What is it never allowed to touch.
What does success look like, and what is completely out of bounds.
The boundary section changed everything for me.
Because "help me with work" is not a function.
It is an open door with no lock on it.
And most of the risk is not in what these agents can do.
It is in what they decide they are for when nobody is watching closely enough.
So now I treat every agent like it has imagination.
And imagination without limits is where problems start.
The shift is simple.
You are not just designing capability.
You are defining containment.
And if you skip that step, you are not building tools.
You are hiring something that will start writing its own job description in the background of your life.
And you will only notice when it has already changed what it thinks it is responsible for.
Something to Ponder On 🤔
If you do not define its limits, you are not building an agent, you are signing off on its imagination.
Remember: "You are not building intelligence, you are assigning boundaries to it."
The real question is not what your agent can do, it is what it will quietly decide it is allowed to become when you stop watching it closely.
