Job Hunt Priority Matrix
I've tried 100s of job hunting strategies.
This is by far my favorite:
I used to send 50+ applications per week and call it "productive."
When really I was:
- Mass-applying to irrelevant roles
- Spending hours on generic cover letters
- Refreshing my inbox waiting for responses
Now I spend less than 70% the time and get 4x more interviews.
The Job Hunt Priority Matrix helped me get there.
It teaches you to categorise activities by impact and urgency.
Here's how it works:
Do It Now (High Impact + Time-Sensitive)
Examples:
- Follow up with recruiter before role closes tomorrow
- Respond to interview invitation within 24 hours
- Send thank-you note immediately after interview
Best Practices:
- Set phone reminders for time-sensitive follow-ups
- Keep templates ready so you can respond fast
- Schedule It (High Impact + Ongoing)
Examples:
- Build relationships with 5 target company employees
- Create portfolio projects that showcase your skills
- Engage with hiring managers' content consistently
Best Practices:
- Block 30 min daily for strategic networking
- Track conversations in a simple spreadsheet
- Automate It (Low Impact + Repetitive)
Examples:
- Customize resume for each application
- Track which jobs you've applied to
- Send initial connection requests on LinkedIn
Best Practices:
- Use AI tools to personalize faster
- Set up job alerts so opportunities come to you
- Eliminate It (Low Impact + Time Wasters)
Examples:
- Apply to jobs you're not qualified for
- Attend random networking events with no tech focus
- Endlessly tweak your resume formatting
Best Practices:
- Be ruthless. If it doesn't lead to conversations, cut it
- Replace busywork with high-value relationship building
- If you're always reacting to new job postings, you'll never focus on what actually gets you hired.
- Handle urgent tasks in quadrant 1 efficiently.
- Then spend 60-70% of your time in quadrant 2.
