Word of the Day! To overwhelm
To be overwhelmed means to be overcome by too much of something, whether it's emotions, information, or physical force. This can happen when you're feeling intense emotions, like happiness or grief, or when you're facing a situation with too many demands to manage, which can lead to feelings of stress, anxiety, or exhaustion.
Definitions and usage
  • Emotionally: To be overpowered by strong feelings, such as being "overwhelmed with excitement" or "overwhelmed by grief".
  • Mentally/Intellectually: To be given too much information or too many tasks to process at once, such as a doctor's office being "overwhelmed with phone calls".
  • Physically: To be covered or buried completely, like a city being "overwhelmed by flooding" or an army being "overwhelmed by superior numbers".
Causes and effects
  • Causes: Intense emotions, excessive stress, an excessive amount of something (like a project or a crowd), or numerous uncontrollable factors.
  • Effects: Can lead to feelings of anxiety, helplessness, exhaustion, or an inability to think clearly. It can also have negative consequences like feeling unhappy or having difficulty making decisions.
Can you give an example of the word of the day? E.g. I felt overwhelmed with work this morning. I had too much work, and I asked my boss to help me.
