How Often Should You Check Your Credit Report?
At a Minimum:
Once every 12 months from each of the 3 major credit bureaus
  • That’s Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion
  • Get them for free at AnnualCreditReport.com
  • Tip: Stagger them every 4 months (one report at a time) to monitor year-round
Ideally:
Every few months — especially if:
  • You're planning to buy a house or car
  • You're applying for a loan or credit card
  • You've been a victim of identity theft or fraud
  • You’re actively rebuilding your credit Monthly (or More Often):
Use free credit monitoring tools or apps like:
  • Credit Karma (TransUnion & Equifax)
  • Experian app
  • CreditWise by Capital One
These don't show your full report, but they alert you to changes in your credit profile.
Why It Matters:
  • Catch errors or fraud early
  • Make sure your credit usage and payments are being reported correctly
  • Stay on track with your financial goals and protect your family’s financial future
