Tools for maintain connections?

I need your help and your opinions. I am currently studying abroad and my time here will be soon over. Therefore I want to stay in contact with some people or at least have some way of connection for the future. I deleted almost all of my social media a few years ago and I think this had super positive impacts on my life. Right now the problem is, that it seems inevitable to use instagram again, to keep some of my new built up connections. Please leave me your thoughts on this situation. Is it worth to open up the box of Pandora again?
