No one tells you this when you start your career… but it can quietly cost you thousands.
Here’s what hit me the most from Sunday's conversation:
1️⃣ I didn’t understand how important tax basics really were.
For years, I didn’t even know what questions to ask or what options were available. I wasn’t reckless — I was just uninformed. That “ignorance tax” is real, and a lot of people are paying it without realizing it.
2️⃣ I missed opportunities I didn’t understand
I had access to things like an HSA and didn’t use it strategically simply because no one explained the long-term impact. Now Gabe and I are seriously looking at opening one again because I finally see how powerful it can be.
3️⃣ I overpaid without realizing it
I never took 15–20 minutes to check if I was overpaying — especially when I was W-2. Overpaying is basically giving the government an interest-free loan, and I did that for years without knowing.
4️⃣ I didn’t have guidance or accountability
Knowing what to do is one thing. Actually doing it is another. I didn’t need more Google searches — I needed support.
That’s why these conversations matter so much to me now.
