REST IS NECESSARY
TESTIMONY TUESDAY
REST IS PART OF THE JOURNEY
Learning to Stop Before Life Stops You
“Get up and eat. If you don’t, the journey will be too much for you.”
1 Kings 19:7 EASY
Family, rest is not something we should wait to do until we are exhausted, overwhelmed, burned out, or our bodies force us to stop.
After one of the greatest victories of Elijah’s ministry, he became physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally depleted. And before God gave Elijah another assignment, He allowed him to sleep, eat, drink and rest.
God understood something Elijah had not yet recognized:
The journey ahead required a restored Elijah.
Some of us are asking God for strength to keep going when God may be telling us it’s time to sit down, replenish and rest.
Rest is not laziness.
Rest is not weakness.
Rest is not quitting.
Rest is not something we have to earn.
Rest is stewardship.
Rest is preparation.
Rest is obedience.
And rest is TRUST.
God established rest as a rhythm in Genesis before human beings ever experienced exhaustion. Jesus also intentionally called His disciples away from the needs of the crowd to rest.
There will ALWAYS be something else to do.
Another email.
Another responsibility.
Another problem.
Another person who needs something.
Another goal.
Another unfinished task.
If we wait until everything is finished before we rest, we will never rest.
At some point, we have to be able to say:
“I’ve done enough for today. God, I trust You with what remains.”
Sometimes our inability to rest reveals something deeper. We may have attached our identity to being needed, productive, available, responsible, or in control.
But everything does not depend on us.
We can stop because God doesn’t.
ASK YOURSELF
1️⃣ When was the last time I rested before I was exhausted and what does my answer reveal about how I treat myself?
2️⃣ What makes me feel guilty when I stop: unfinished work, disappointing people, losing control, feeling unproductive, or something deeper?
3️⃣ Have I made being needed such a large part of my identity that I don’t know who I am when nobody needs anything from me?
4️⃣ What signs has my body, mind, attitude, or spirit been giving me that I’ve been ignoring?
5️⃣ Am I actually carrying responsibilities God assigned to me or have I assumed responsibility for things and people He never told me to carry?
6️⃣ What am I avoiding by staying busy? What thoughts, emotions, decisions, grief, or truth might surface if I became still?
7️⃣ What would trusting God enough to rest actually look like in my life this week not theoretically, but practically?
KEYS TO BIBLICAL REST
1️⃣ Rest before exhaustion makes the decision for you.
Don’t wait until your body forces what wisdom could have chosen.
2️⃣ Stop confusing rest with laziness.
Laziness avoids responsibility. Rest restores you so you can handle responsibility well.
3️⃣ Pay attention to your body.
Elijah needed spiritual direction, but first he needed food, water and sleep. Your body is part of what God entrusted you to steward.
4️⃣ Create rhythms, not rescue missions.
Rest shouldn’t only happen after you’ve crashed. Put it into your life before you need recovery.
5️⃣ Release the guilt of being unavailable.
You do not have to be accessible to everybody at all times to be loving, faithful or responsible.
6️⃣ Let stillness reveal what’s underneath the busyness.
Don’t immediately run from what surfaces when life gets quiet. Some things can only be healed after they’re finally heard.
7️⃣ Trust God with what remains unfinished.
This may be the hardest one. Rest says, “God, I’m stopping here because I trust You to still be God while I sleep.”
PRAYER
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for bringing us back together and for keeping, protecting, providing, healing, and carrying us during our time away.
Father, teach us how to rest.
We know how to work, serve, provide, carry, and show up but teach us that we do not have to wait until we are depleted to stop.
Forgive us for wearing exhaustion like a badge of honor and believing everything depends on us. Give us wisdom to recognize when we need rest, nourishment, boundaries, quiet, and time with You.
Father, for the woman who is tired today, meet her underneath her tree like You met Elijah.
Feed what is depleted.
Restore what has been poured out.
Quiet what is overwhelmed.
Heal what busyness has helped her avoid.
Teach us to work when it’s time to work, move when it’s time to move, and sit down when it’s time to sit down.
We trust You with what we cannot finish, the people we cannot fix, the problems we cannot solve, and everything tomorrow holds.
And while we rest, remind us that You are still God.
In Jesus’ name we pray,
AMEN
DECREE & DECLARE
1️⃣ I decree and declare that exhaustion will no longer be the evidence I use to prove that I am productive, valuable or faithful.
2️⃣ I decree and declare that I will honor the body, mind and spirit God entrusted to me by recognizing when I need to stop, replenish and be restored.
3️⃣ I decree and declare that I release the guilt associated with rest. I do not have to earn what God built into the rhythm of creation.
4️⃣ I decree and declare that I will not carry responsibilities, expectations and burdens God never assigned to me.
5️⃣ I decree and declare that I am breaking my dependence on being needed. My identity is rooted in who I am in God not how much I do for everybody else.
6️⃣ I decree and declare that I will create rhythms of rest before exhaustion becomes an emergency. I will listen when my body whispers so it does not have to scream.
7️⃣ I decree and declare that I can STOP because GOD DOESN’T. I can sleep while God watches. I can release while God holds. I can rest while God works. And I trust Him with everything that remains unfinished.
