An Important Anniversary
I realized today a significant anniversary was approaching. Not wedding or birthday, but the 50th anniversary of my public speaking debut. It was inauspicious and probably painful for the judges whose task it was to judge a round of Impromptu speaking.
Don’t know what Impromptu speaking is? Join the club. It just means speaking without notes. It’s one of my favorite things to do, and I love teaching people how to do it.
I was clueless and stumbled my way from that first speech to teaching public speaking at two local universities. I’ve been a high school debate coach and took students to the National Forensics Tournament – an event featuring award-winning speakers from across the country.
I went to the region and state public speaking tournaments as a student and took students to those as well as interstate tournaments. As a speaker, I won debate and individual speaking trophies for the University smart enough to give me a scholarship.
I’ve been speaking for a living for more than five decades now. How I wish I knew the things I know now. The first speeches I gave would have been much better.
Learning how to speak without notes is a skill that can be taught. I’ve taught thousands of students how to speak “off the cuff”, speaking in an organized manner after only one minute of preparation.
I hope you’ll join me in this fun adventure. It will organize your thoughts and ideas you value into speeches to help the world be better with your voice. We are all here to do something extraordinary. Let’s learn how to make your voice make a difference.
