Is Fine Art University worth it?
I haven’t posted in a while — I’ve been busy with school. Can you imagine? We have to produce six paintings/collages in about three hours!
Anyway, I wanted to ask: are any of you currently in fine art school, or were you in the past? Because my university feels really weird… or maybe all fine art schools are like this?
In my first year, almost everything we did was abstract. We only had one life drawing session per week, and we had only two painting sessions the entire year. I thought in the second year we’d finally learn more technical skills, but we still haven’t used oil paint at all. And we don’t even have life drawing sessions anymore.
As much as I enjoy experimenting with paint and collage, I really wish they would teach us more about drawing and painting techniques. One of my teachers said, “Anyone can draw a pretty picture.” I don’t agree with that at all — you need to build skills and knowledge to improve.
Honestly, if it wasn’t for people like Chris who share their knowledge online, I would never have learned how to draw or paint just by going to university. And that’s mind-blowing to me.
What do you think? Is this normal?
