I’m Joseph McGill, Jr., founder of the Slave Dwelling Project and co-author of Sleeping with the Ancestors: How I Followed the Footprints of Slavery. I created this community to preserve and honor the lives of enslaved African Americans through storytelling, site visits, reenactments, and honest conversation.
This is more than a group — it's a living digital archive. At a time when some seek to erase this history, we’re making sure it remains visible, truthful, and accessible for future generations.
Here, I share my experiences from sleepovers in slave dwellings, African American Civil War reenactments, and campfire conversations across the country. You’ll also find resources for educators, reflections from descendants, and insights from current research.
If you’re here to learn, teach, remember, or connect — welcome. Together, we carry the voices of the past into the present, and into the future.
