Why do people say “I don’t think…..”
Have you noticed how often people say:
I don’t think this will work
I don’t think I can
I don’t think that’s right
It’s funny, because of course we ARE thinking.
That phrase didn’t start because people weren’t thinking.
It started because it sounds safer.
It softens what we say.
It makes us sound less certain.
It protects us from being wrong.
But the brain still hears the negative first.
I don’t think I can
→ brain hears: can’t
I don’t think this will work
→ brain hears: won’t work
Try changing the structure:
I think this may be difficult
I think this might not work
I think I can improve
Same meaning.
Different direction.
Words change the picture in your mind.
