Every Product Gets a Digital Identity
When people hear about Sunrise 2027, their first reaction is often to think, "So we are replacing one barcode with another." That is understandable. It is also a little like saying the Internet was simply a better telephone. The technology may look similar on the surface, but what it makes possible is entirely different.
The real breakthrough is that individual products are beginning to receive their own digital identities. Notice I did not say "product types." I said "individual products."
For decades, manufacturers have identified products by model numbers. Every jar of a particular brand of peanut butter looked identical to the checkout scanner. Every bottle of shampoo shared the same barcode. Every package of breakfast cereal appeared to be exactly the same.
To a traditional barcode, they were. To a next-generation GS1 barcode, they do not have to be. One jar of peanut butter may have been produced on Monday morning in one factory, while another came from a different production line several days later. They may look identical sitting side by side on the grocery shelf, yet each has its own history.
That history now has the opportunity to travel with the product. Imagine a manufacturer discovers a problem affecting one production run. Today, the evening news announces that every jar of a particular product is being recalled. Consumers search their cupboards, retailers remove entire shelves of merchandise, and perfectly good products often end up being discarded simply because there is no practical way to distinguish them from those that may actually be affected.
Now imagine a different approach. A checkout scanner identifies not merely the product, but the exact production batch. Your smartphone does the same. Instead of recalling millions of items, the manufacturer recalls only those that were genuinely affected. Safer for consumers. Less waste for retailers. Greater confidence for everyone involved.
The same thinking applies to food freshness. Anyone who has worked in retail knows that managing expiration dates can be a constant challenge. Products are checked manually, discounted near the end of their shelf life, or removed altogether.
With richer product information embedded in a 2D barcode, much of that process becomes far more precise. Retail systems can recognize exactly which items should be discounted first, helping reduce unnecessary waste while ensuring customers receive fresher products. It is easy to see why grocery stores are paying close attention.
Authentication is another area where this technology becomes increasingly valuable. Counterfeit products have become a global challenge, affecting everything from luxury handbags to cosmetics, nutritional supplements, replacement parts, and prescription medications.
A unique digital identity gives manufacturers a much stronger way to verify authenticity. Instead of asking, "Is this the correct product?" we can begin asking, "Is this the exact item that left the factory?" That is an important distinction.
As I have been researching Sunrise 2027, I have found myself thinking beyond retail shelves. Books have editions. Training manuals are revised. Course workbooks evolve. Research reports receive updates. In many ways, these are no different from manufactured products. They are physical objects carrying knowledge rather than groceries or household goods.
Imagine purchasing a printed workbook for a coaching program. One quick scan confirms you have the latest edition, providing access to updated worksheets, and pointing you toward additional resources that were created after the book went to print.
The printed page no longer marks the end of the conversation. It becomes the beginning of a continuing relationship. That simple shift may prove just as significant for authors, educators, consultants, and content creators as it is for manufacturers.
The more I learn about Sunrise 2027, the more convinced I become that this initiative is not fundamentally about replacing barcodes. It is about giving physical objects the ability to identify themselves with far greater precision and to remain connected to accurate, up-to-date digital information throughout their entire lives.
Once every object has a trusted digital identity, entirely new possibilities begin to emerge. And that is exactly where we are headed next.
