Wins and Nostalgia Moments
This post is completely off the cuff, totally spontaneous because I just had a moment with all the feels.
I have been in online business for a very long time. My first business was on a platform called Second Life, I did very well there. I began that business in 2006. It still has a presence there, I still get invited to events and people reach out to me.
Today, I logged in to do some maintence work and I had a private message waiting that got me to say Wow. Just... wow. I get these every so often and they are total WIN moments. The moments that I really feel.
Business to me is never just about numbers. It is also about the relationship I have with my people. I take it to heart and seriously. I've said before that I don't think we can truly seperate ourselves from our business and when we place our energy into it, it becomes something sacred. It has the potential to be.
What I did/do in Second Life is create experiences. I create 3D assets that can be used in that 3D world. I took the harder road making furniture, role play accessories, gardens and landscaping amongst other some more spicy objects. I built for fantasy, medieval mostly. I build full sims, and worlds when given half a chance, it is what I do.
Fast forward to today. A customer left me a message, they were looking for an herb garden that I had created. They had lost theirs. Side note, I've created A LOT of gardens and herb gardens or accessories, 20 years of creating you tend to redo things or upgrade them, so I wasn't sure which one they meant. I assumed my latest version that uses meshes.... but then in a follow up message they attached a picture of the packaging that the garden had come in.
The item was from before meshes, it was made roughly around 2010.
2010... 16 years ago.
This customer had stuck through all of the things for at least 16 years.
Mind boggling. It still catches me off guard whenever something like this happens.
This is a win for me yes, and I get all the feels that someone sticks it out with me for so long, through all the bs, all the ups and downs. All of my crazy... and they are still there.
You see, when we talk about building community this is the kind of stuff that you are hoping to accomplish. When you're talking to yourself and wonder what's the point. When you feel like you are just spinning your wheels. Or the day is too hard. Or you don't know if your stuff makes a difference... you get things like this that come up.
She didn't want the latest newest creation, she wanted this old, very outdated, badly scripted piece that I had created 16 years ago that isn't even in my vendor system any longer, and when I was able to give it to her.... because I throw nothing away and keep back ups for inspiration but also... nostalgia, of other times.... she was so thankful. And it cost me nothing, and she keeps coming back.
I'm writing this because I want to encourage all the new world builders out there. It takes practice, it takes heart and it takes strength to see it through but.... you can, and someday you'll get a message like that and it will lift your day more than you can imagine.
