Don’t Look Up — that scene where the scientists see the meteor coming and everyone treats them like conspiracy nuts? Yeah… I’m kinda feeling that energy right now.
I’ve been digging into the hard numbers on soil, water, food systems, homelessness, incarceration, and what actually works to fix them. The data is brutal, but there are proven models that flip the script on multiple crises at once.
The Global Wound (Soil, Water, Food)
- We lose 36 billion tons of topsoil annually.
- Agriculture uses 70% of global freshwater withdrawals, with 30–50% wasted due to degraded soil.
- 1.3 billion tons of food wasted yearly (33% of production) while ~1 billion people face overt hunger and 3 billion suffer “hidden hunger” (nutrient deficiency despite calories).
- By 2050 under business-as-usual: 90–95% of Earth’s land at risk of degradation; 4.8–5.7 billion people facing severe water scarcity.
Conventional farming often makes only $100–$4,000/acre (sometimes subsidized). Really good organic tops out around $10k–$15k/acre in the best cases.

Housing First models show stable housing alone cuts public costs dramatically (often 1.5–2x return via reduced emergency services, jails, hospitals).Community First Village (Austin) houses hundreds of formerly homeless people with land, tiny homes, work opportunities, and community. Their model is expanding because it works — combining housing with purposeful activity and support.
Horticulture Therapy & Recidivism
- San Quentin Insight Garden Program: Recidivism drops from California’s normal 50–60% to under 10%.
- Planting Justice (post-incarceration gardening/land work): Similar dramatic reductions in reoffending through meaningful land connection, skill-building, and purpose.

The Integrated Vision
A Singing Frogs-style eco-village combines all of this:
- Regenerative no-till farms healing soil/water while producing nutrient-dense food.
- Housing First + community for the unhoused.
- Horticulture therapy and skill ladders for formerly incarcerated people.
- Value-added processing (powders, ferments, hemp crafts) for strong economics.
- Civilization Starter Kit: picture manuals, sign language + Sutton SignWriting for resilience if systems break.
Triple Bottom Line — Profit, People, Planet — all addressed at once. Alumni systems create rapid knowledge spread. Scaling to hundreds of thousands of such units by 2040–2050 could meaningfully bend degradation curves in priority regions.
The resistance will be real (Big Farma, subsidy inertia, cultural inertia), but the science is compelling, profitable, and humanly restorative. This feels like the real path forward — grounded, crafty, embodied, and antifragile.
I’m putting together a manifesto with all the data. This is me trying to channel the energy productively instead of just freaking out like the Don’t Look Up characters.
