A conservative friend asked me a few questions about my opinions on Donald Trump. It was in an online forum, and I've been really busy lately so now that thread is buried under so many notifications it's difficult to retrieve. But I've been thinking about it, and I think this is my most simple response. It's not my intent here to sound provocative, but I just can't think of another way to express it.
My perspective is informed by my life experience. My Grandparents lived through the second World War, and both my grandfather's fought on opposite sides. They formed a very strong bond which still touches me when I think about it. My family would often talk about the war when I was growing up, and it's always fascinated me as much as it's frightened me. I've read a lot of material about the rise of Hitler and the Nazis over the years, and there's still plenty more I haven't had the time to get around to.
So, here's the blunt truth:
When Trump says "The lying Media" I hear "Lügenpresse"
When I look at Aligator Alcatraz, I think of Dachau
When I look at reports on ICE, I see Gestapo
When I see Bugaloo's and Proud Boys online, I'm reminded of Brownshirts.
My former girlfriend was Vietnamese, and we talked about it a lot. Surprisingly for me, she had a lot of respect for him. She viewed him as a strong leader. But I see a weak insecure man who is compensating for these flaws by being aggressive. Hitler was much the same. Dr. Josef Steiner Brin reported that Hitler had an undescended testicle while he was incarcerated at Landsberg Prison following the failed Munich Beer Hall Putsch.
This morning multiple news outlets here in Australia reported on this incident. When an ABC Journalist asked Trump a difficult question, he resorted to making threats. A lot of labels have been thrown around to describe Trump, "Authoritarian", "Fascist", "Dictator", I don't disagree with any of these descriptions. Interestingly, the late Cardinal George Pell once remarked that Donald Trump is “a bit of a barbarian, but in some important ways, he is ‘our’ barbarian.” It reminded me of the Catholic Churches complicity in the Holocaust. In the comments there is a Cartoon from Australia which adds perspective on how some of us here view this behaviour. Do I go too far? What's your perspective? All civil conversations welcome.
