Weather conditions: sunny, then light rain, then windy, then sunny, then heavy rain, then sunny again – welcome to germany xD
Goals:
What were you going in with? I just wanted to cross the finish line. The "good" time I had in mind: 1h15min. My "it's okay, but please not longer than this"-time I had in mind" 1h30min.
Training background:
Started running in October. Then ran my first 5k run in the first week of december. Then I was sick for three months and wasn't able to run. Afterwards, I really struggled with my mind while running. I had two different sportive goals until this weekend, but my gym-goal was actually my priority, so five times per week in the gym, one of them a treadmill-session, saturday a rest-day and sunday my run-walk of 12-15km. I never ran more than five kilometers without walking except one single time: two sundays before the race. At race day, I had a 20sec walk, just to drink my water.
Race day:
Pre-race: Well, I was very, very unmotivated to run that day xD I felt like just going back home and sleeping in. And everyone around me was so energetic and excited. I arrived two hours before start, we (boyfriend and I) collected my startnumber and then we walked through the city to watch the halfmarathon-ers. Standing at the starting zone, I was still pretty unmotivated. Like, why do I even do this? And then it started, and I just focused on chewing my gum 🤣 After 600m I looked onto my watch for the first time, and thought: "Oh bother, still 9,4km left...". After 5km I felt pretty proud as I ran them all the way through!? Then I looked on my watch and saw that it's been around 40min. Then I thought "Well, then let's run for 60min, and then I can allow myself a little walk". Funny enough, after 1hr I tried to walk, and god, did these five steps hurt. Walking did hurt more than running, so obviously I had to continue running. At the finish line, I actually out of a sudden felt a lot of pain. My take: Go to the toilet BEFORE you start the run, and don't think "Nah, that can wait". One day later: Ahhh, my legs are SORE. And yep, booked the halfmarathon-race on august 30th.
Fueling and gear:
I wore a leggings, a sweater and my vest (nope, not the for-drinks-kinda-vest). I did buy a running vest, but it arrived two days before the race and I didn't want to run the race with something I haven't tested before. I only drank water before. And 2,5hrs before the race, I ate bread with two scrambled eggs. Plus magnesium 😉 Other than that, while racing: chewing gum, one dextro energy, and a cup of water after 8km.
What went well:
I ran 1 hours without daring to walk.
I felt good while running.
I did run although I didn't feel like running that day.
The rain felt good while running.
What I'd do differently:
I would look up at what km the water stations are. We had one after 1km, one after 3km, and then at 8km. I don't need water after 3km... But after 5km, I would have enjoyed some water, and then had to "suffer" for another 3km before finally being able to drink something.
Also: not wearing THIS vest, but actually my running vest.
Would I run this race again?
Yes, but next year probably the halfmarathon or even the marathon – who knows 😉
