It's not a complex formula!
Hey music lovers!
Most people find the idea of writing their own sheet music daunting. I even remember hearing a friend say they don’t know how to arrange sheet music after they took an instrumental arranging class. There is work involved with writing your own sheet music, but I think most people are trying to approach it the wrong way. Many view arranging covers of their favorite songs as like understanding a math formula. In my own experience, what you need isn’t a formula, but the right tools to help your creative imagination come to life.
If I were to boil down the process of making original sheet music, I believe it would condense down to three tools.
1. Knowledge of music theory - Even those who play by ear are utilizing music theory (they just don’t know it) and can become even more powerful musicians if they knew more about it.
2. Knowledge of the instrument - If you’re already taking lessons on an instrument, you’re plenty knowledgeable already.
3. Your imagination – You can hear the music in your head, and experimenting with your instrument and music theory will help you get that sound onto paper.
I’ve arranged hymns, folk songs, movie soundtracks, rock songs, pop songs, and more for many different instruments. These tools have helped my creativity, and I believe they will help you too.
If you would like to develop one or more of these tools for your own writing, comment below. I would love to hear about your dreams.
Can’t wait to hear your music!
