🚨 ChatGPT Shared Chats Are Now Showing Up in Google
Quick heads-up. If you’ve ever used the “Share” link feature in ChatGPT, your private chats might not be so private anymore.
Google has started indexing shared chats. That means:
* Your shared links could show up in search results
* Anyone can read them if they find them
* There’s no way to unshare them once they’re out there
I’ve seen chats with marketing strategies, client notes, and even confidential info pop up just by doing a quick Google search.
âť“ When Can a ChatGPT Link Be Indexed?
A shared chat may be picked up by Google if:
  • You posted it on a public platform like Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack, Skool, or Twitter
  • Someone you sent it to re-shared it somewhere publicly
  • It was included in a blog post, email newsletter, or any other crawlable page
  • Someone embedded or quoted it on a page that Google indexes
If a bot follows the link, the content becomes visible to search engines and could be indexed.
Even if you only shared it privately, someone else may have made it public without realising.
✅ Here’s How to Check and Protect Yourself
Step 1: Find Your Shared Chat Links
Look through your messages, emails, browser history, or anywhere you’ve posted a ChatGPT link.
They look like this:
Step 2: Use Google to See If They’re Public
Go to Google and search:
site:chat.openai.com/share "a phrase from your chat"
Example:
site:chat.openai.com/share "automated email follow-up with GHL"
If you see your chat in the results, it’s indexed and viewable by anyone.
Step 3: Remove What You Can
* Delete the original chat inside ChatGPT
* Then go to this link to request that Google remove it:
Optional: Export and Search Your Chat History
If you want to check everything:
1. Go to ChatGPT settings → Data controls → Export data
2. You’ll get an email with a .zip file
3. Open the `chat.html` file and search for the word `share` to find any links
You can also use third-party tools like `chatgpt-exporter` to organise and review past chats more easily, but use caution as they aren’t official OpenAI tools.
Safer Ways to Share ChatGPT Outputs
* Use screenshots
* Copy text into a private doc (Google Docs or Notion)
* Export as a PDF if needed
* Avoid sending the raw share links if the content is valuable or sensitive
