Being a man of your word
Good morning gentlemen,
We always hear the phrase “being a man of your word.” There are some that take this phrase to mean that you only keep your word if you actually say these exact words. But it’s much more than that as a gentleman. As a gentleman, every word you speak, you should understand you are held accountable for. It is not just a promise you make to someone. It’s the words you speak to your family, friends, co-workers, yes even strangers. Every word we speak and yes write should be well thought out. If you speak harshly towards someone, if you speak derogatory towards someone, if you gossip, this shows a reflection on you and your integrity as well. This also goes for when you write or respond in writing. Sometimes this is even worse, because we tend to put in writing things that we would not say in person. ( Disclaimer, when I say we I am not calling out anyone or assuming that everyone does this, this “we” is referring to the human race. So do not take this as finger pointing, calling out someone.)
We have to make sure that what we say, we understand and mean what we say and be willing to stand behind what we say. This is extremely important when you make a promise to someone or you use the term, “ You have my word.” Now, having said this, we all know that things happen beyond our control, when this happens it is imperative that you go to the person you made the commitment to and apologize and explain why to were unable to fulfill your obligation. Not saying that if it’s personal you have to tell your personal business, but simply state “ something personal came up and I apologize.” And if you can at a later date fulfill that obligation, if possible give them a time in which you can meet that obligation.
Gentlemen let’s be men of our words.
