Why Serving Others Heals Us Too
There’s a strange paradox in life that many of us discover the hard way.
Sometimes the fastest way to heal ourselves…is to help someone else.
When life gets difficult, our instinct is often to turn inward. We focus on the problems we’re facing, the pain we’re carrying, and the questions we can’t answer. And while reflection has its place, staying in that space too long can make everything feel heavier.
But something remarkable happens when we step outside ourselves and start helping others.
Our perspective shifts. Our hearts open. And sometimes the very thing we needed begins to grow inside us again.
Hope.
When My Cup Was Empty
There were periods in my life when I felt emotionally drained. Family struggles, personal challenges, and the chaos that sometimes surrounds us in life can take more out of us than we realize.
It can feel like everything around you is slowly emptying your cup.
For me, one of the ways I found my way through those moments was through something called Liam’s Lunches of Love.
My son Liam and I started making meals for people experiencing homelessness. Over time we ended up handing out around 30,000 lunches to people who needed them.
And something amazing happened every time we went out to do it.
No matter how bad I felt before we left the house…No matter how heavy life seemed that day…
By the time we finished handing out those lunches, I felt different.
I felt full again.
Those conversations, those smiles, those moments of simple human connection reminded me that even when life feels overwhelming, we still have the ability to make someone else’s day better.
And in doing that, something inside us heals too.
The Healing Power of Empathy
Empathy is one of the most powerful forces we have as human beings.
When we truly see another person — not as a stranger, not as a problem, but as another human being with their own struggles and their own story — something shifts inside us.
Empathy builds bridges.
It reminds us that we are all connected in ways we often forget.
And it changes the way we move through the world.
The more we practice empathy, the more compassion we create. Not just for others, but for ourselves as well.
Why I Built Communities Around Service
This idea is one of the reasons I created communities like Rise Up a Rockstar and the League of Heroes.
The concept behind them is simple but powerful: we all have the ability to be heroes in small ways.
You don’t need superpowers to help someone. You don’t need wealth or fame to make a difference.
Sometimes being a hero simply means showing up for someone who needs it.
The more people who embrace that mindset, the stronger and more compassionate our communities become.
A World Where More People Flourish
There’s an app called Heroic, created by Brian Johnson, that is built around a bold mission: helping 51% of the world flourish by the year 2051.
That’s a big vision.
But it starts with simple ideas — personal growth, compassion, service, and helping people become the best versions of themselves.
Because when individuals flourish, communities flourish.
And when communities flourish, the world becomes a better place.
Why We’re Really Here
There’s a quote I’ve heard before that has always stuck with me, even though I can’t remember exactly who said it:
“If we’re not here to serve others, why are we here?”
It’s a powerful question.
Because when you really think about it, the moments in life that mean the most are rarely the ones where we focused only on ourselves.
They’re the moments where we helped someone.Lifted someone up.Made someone feel seen.
Service isn’t just charity, It’s connection.
And connection is one of the most healing forces in the world.
Rising Up Together
If you’re going through a hard time right now, one small thing you might consider is looking for a way to help someone else.
It doesn’t have to be something big.
A conversation.A kind gesture.A few hours volunteering.Helping someone who needs encouragement.
Those moments matter.
Not only for the person receiving the help, but for the person giving it.
Because sometimes the path to healing ourselves begins with reaching out and helping someone else.
And when we do that, something powerful happens.
We rise up.
Together.
