Yesterday I talked about the trap of buying a job. Today I am showing you the math of an actual owner.
Most people in the acquisition space are happy with a 20% margin and a full calendar. They think being busy is the same thing as being successful.
It isn't.
In my world, if I have to show up to make my $40k a month, I’ve failed. That money isn't just profit. It is a "Freedom Tax" the business pays me for building a system that doesn't need my permission to exist.
If you are currently looking at deals, stop asking about the equipment and start asking about the friction.
The Three Points of Friction That Kill Freedom
1. The Owner Operator Ghost
If the customers ask for the owner by name, you are buying a personality, not a company. You need to buy businesses where the brand is the service, not the human. This is how you stay in the Acquisition Seat while the revenue stays green.
2. The Analog Anchor
If the business relies on paper, whiteboards, or the "memory" of a manager, it is a ticking time bomb. You are buying a digital facelift opportunity. I look for businesses stuck in the stone age because I know a CRM and automated follow ups add 15% to the bottom line instantly.
3. The Invisible Manager
You don't need to be there if you have a Daily Scorecard. My managers report 5 numbers every morning. If they are green, I play pickleball. If they are red, we have a 10 minute call. That is the entire extent of my operational involvement.
The Bottom Line
The biggest on this platform aren't the ones working the hardest. They are the ones with the best systems. You can either buy a job or you can build a machine.
