The fence held this week. Then a goat walked out anyway.
I wrote about that Friday, so I will not go through it again, except for the part that has been sitting with me since.
I fixed the wrong problem. Not a useless problem. A coyote dug under that fence and killed a rooster, and securing it was the right thing to do. But I fixed the threat I had just seen, and while I was doing that, the fence was failing somewhere else entirely, for reasons that had nothing to do with coyotes.
The neighbor's kid had to tell us.
I think that is most of how it goes. We tend to prepare for the last thing that happened to us. It is the most available picture, so it becomes the shape of what we are guarding against, and meanwhile the actual weak point is something we walked right past, because it wasn't the thing we were looking for.
I wasn't being careless. I acted, and I did walk that fence. I was just looking for what was trying to get in, not what was trying to get out.
And you probably won't find everything. You walk the line, check what you can, fix what you do find, and go inside.
There is something out there tonight I have not found. There was last month too.
I will be back out there tomorrow.
