U.S. payrolls increased 139,000 in May, more than expected; unemployment at 4.2%
Key Points - Nonfarm payrolls rose 139,000 for the month, above the Dow Jones estimate for 125,000 and a bit below the downwardly revised 147,000 in April. The unemployment rate held at 4.2%. - Worker pay grew more than expected, with average hourly earnings up 0.4% during the month and 3.9% from a year ago. - Nearly half the job growth came from health care, which added 62,000. Private sector hiring rose by just 37,000 in May, the lowest in more than two years, ADP says
Key Points - Private payrolls increased just 37,000 In May, below the 60,000 in April and the Dow Jones forecast for 110,000. U.S. payroll growth totals 177,000 in April, topping expectations
Job growth was stronger than expected in April despite worries over the impact of President Donald Trump’s blanket tariffs against U.S. trading partners. Nonfarm payrolls increased a seasonally adjusted 177,000 for the month, slightly below the downwardly revised 185,000 in March but above the Dow Jones estimate for 133,000, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday. Private payroll growth slowed to 62,000 in April, well below expectations
Key Points - Private sector payrolls rose by just 62,000 for the month, the smallest gain since July 2024, down from 147,000 in March and missing the Dow Jones consensus estimate for an increase of 120,000. - Leisure and hospitality posted the biggest gain, adding 27,000 jobs.
