Newton’s 3rd Law
“For every action in nature, there is an equal and opposite reaction.”
Key Concepts and Examples:
- Fundamental Principle: Forces result from interactions; if object A pushes object B, object B pushes back on A with the same force
- Rocket Propulsion: A rocket pushes exhaust gases downward (action), and the gases push the rocket upward (reaction)
- Walking/Jumping: Your feet push backward on the ground, and the ground pushes your feet forward
- Recoil: When a gun fires a bullet forward (action), the bullet exerts an equal backward force on the gun (reaction)
- Gravity: While Earth pulls an apple down, the apple pulls the Earth up with an equal force

The takeaway here is that there’s no such thing as “tricking” or “beating” the universe.
If you rush, the universe slows you down.
If you resist, the universe pushes you forward.
