Quote 1: “I know what I have to do now. I’ve got to keep breathing because tomorrow the sun will rise. Who knows what the tide could bring?” - Chuck Noland, Cast Away
Quote 2: “My advice is, never do tomorrow what you can do today. Procrastination is the thief of time.” - Charles Dickens, David Copperfield
Cast Away is a 2000 survival drama movie following a FedEx operations executive named Chuck Noland who is in a relationship with a graduate student named Kelly Frears. The two have dated and lived together for a while, due to their busy schedules, they haven’t gotten married yet. Chuck rushes to catch another business plane on Christmas Day of 1955, but he gives Kelly a ring before he leaves. Unfortunately for their relationship, the plane has technical difficulties and lands in the south Pacific where Chuck washes to the shore of a deserted island unharmed by using a life raft. Chuck remains unaware of what happened to anyone else on the plane or the plane itself. Chuck also has a bunch of packages wash up to the shore with him which he originally leaves untouched out of respect, but then hives the necessity of his survival. Chuck needs literally survival with food, water, shelter and fire, but he also needs emotional survival from his loneliness. Chuck gets to survive emotionally with an heirloom pocket watch Christmas present from Kelly and a volleyball which he names Wilson after painting a face on it. Chuck continues to try and survive and escape the island despite the strong currents on the island keeping him in by using Kelly as an emotional and motivational anchor. Chuck’s adventure doesn’t end here however, as there is still more to his adventure.
Cast Away’s quote explains that we have to keep on living and fighting because we don’t know what tomorrow will bring. The only thing we know for certain is that the sun will rise once again tomorrow, and we will be there breathing as it rises. Even if we are at the edge of giving up, there will always be the potential of tomorrow to keep us continuing our passion, our work, our hopes, and our dreams. Today ends and brings us to a new tomorrow and we should be there ready for it.
David Copperfield by Charles Dickens was serially published in May of 1849 and published in November of 1850. The book is one of Dickens most popular books which was also a personal favorite for Dickens as it was also a semi-autobiographical work. The book is Bildungsroman which follows protagonist David Copperfield’s growth in life from infancy to maturity. This book marks a turning point in Dickens' writing career which separates his youth novels from us mature novels. The book is told in the first-person perspective of David Copperfield who is middle-aged and reflecting back upon his life. David reflects on his past with his mother and housekeeper, Clara Peggotty, who married a cruel and controlling man, Edward Murdstone. David is sent to a boarding school after rebelling against Murdstone where he meets friends, but during the second semester his mother and son die. David is sent to Murdstone’s winery in London where he stays with Mr. and Mrs. Micawber until he runs away to his great-aunt, Mrs. Betsey Trotwood, who takes him on the advice of Mr. Dick. This only scratches the surface of the book as David’s adventures are far from over.
David Copperfield’s quote explains that we only have so much time to live and exist here and we should use our time to the fullest as our procrastination only serves to steal time away from us. (This is something that becomes even truer as my summer break continues to close to an end). We should never push something off until tomorrow if we can do it today. Sometimes we need to push things off to get a break, but if we have the time to get a little more done today and stop procrastinating from stealing more time from today; tomorrow’s potential will only grow because of it.
I hope you have realized the potential of tomorrow with these quotes. Have a great day everyone!
