Carrick comes in as Ruben Amorim's replacement following the coach's sacking by United at the start of the month. With United having been knocked out of the FA Cup at the hands of Brighton last week, the goal for Carrick now is to finish in the top five of the English Premier League, starting with this home clash.
Man City heads into this key fixture looking to maintain an unbeaten run. That sequence currently stands at 13 matches across all competitions, following the 2-0 victory away to Newcastle in the first leg of the team's EFL Cup semifinal in midweek.
Caretaker manager Michael Carrick is in the United dugout for the first time. It's a big one. United are seventh and only four points adrift of the Champions League places, but also just six points above 15th-placed Bournemouth on a congested Premier League table.
City have drawn three matches on the bounce but can put scoreboard pressure on league leaders Arsenal with a win here, as the Gunners only kick off later on the same day away to Nottingham Forest. Pep Guardiola's side progressed to the next round of the FA Cup by thrashing Exeter 10-1, and they've also got one foot in the Carabao Cup final after beating Newcastle 2-0 away from home in the first leg of the semis. They're also unbeaten in 13 matches across all competitions.
Carrick was announced as Ruben Amorim's successor, at least until the end of this season, just three days before the second Manchester derby of the 2025-26 Premier League season.
City won the first 3-0 back in September, and Pep Guardiola's side will come into this game as favourites to complete the double over their local rivals. Although a run of three straight draws allowed Arsenal to pull away at the top of the standings, City are on a 13-game unbeaten streak in all competitions. They beat Newcastle United 2-0 away in the Carabao Cup semifinal first leg on Wednesday, which came after a 10-1 obliteration of Exeter City in the FA Cup.
The two sides come into this match in contrasting positions. Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City find themselves second in the Premier League and could halve the gap to Arsenal should they win and the Gunners lose at Nottingham Forest.
City, in fact, have enjoyed quite a cheerful week. New signing Antoine Semenyo scored his first goals for the club in both a 10-1 FA Cup defeat of Exeter City and a 2-0 Carabao Cup defeat of Newcastle.
It was then all but confirmed on Friday that they were set to land another long-term transfer target in Marc Guehi in the coming days, an arrival Guardiola will be incredibly grateful for as he deals with a rash of injuries in his back-line.
And they could brighten the mood further today, as a win would see them complete a league double over their most bitter rivals.
The 198th Manchester derby takes place today as Manchester United hosts Manchester City.
The Red Devils appointed former captain Michael Carrick as Ruben Amorim's replacement, after the 40-year-old was sacked earlier this month.
Manchester City eased past Newcastle United in their first-leg Carabao Cup semi-final earlier this week, winning 2-0 in the North East.
Manchester United has turned to former player Michael Carrick to salvage its imploding season.
Carrick was hired Tuesday as head coach until the end of the season after Ruben Amorim was fired last week.
The former England midfielder won five Premier League titles and the Champions League during a trophy-laden playing career at Old Trafford. He was also an assistant coach at United and had an unbeaten three-match spell as interim manager when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was fired in 2021.
By appointing Carrick on a temporary basis, United is giving itself time to find a long-term replacement for Amorim, who became the sixth permanent manager or coach to be discarded by the storied club after more than a decade of decline since Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.
It is possible Carrick could put himself in contention if he impresses during the 17 remaining games this season. And while he has only initially been appointed for the short-term, it was notable that United did not describe him as interim when announcing his contract.
His priority is to secure Champions League qualification after defeat to Brighton in the third round of the FA Cup on Sunday put the 20-time English champion on course for another trophyless season after ending up empty-handed last term.
United, which was knocked out of the English League Cup by fourth-tier Grimsby, is seventh in the Premier League, but Carrick said he had β€œtotal belief” in the players.
Amorim was the latest to fail to lead United back to the summit of English soccer in the post-Ferguson era after David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Solskjaer and Erik ten Hag.
Carrick was part of one of Ferguson’s greatest teams, which won a Premier League and Champions League double in 2008. In all he won 12 major trophies in 12 years at United.
