MahaMudra Chant
About 1,000 years ago there was a brilliant scholar in India, Naropa, who could recite all the logical truths and concepts, but had not yet achieved enlightenment. He abandoned his post in the university and followed his Guru, Tilopa, for 12 years to attain enlightenment. Finally, sitting next to his Guru on the Ganges, his Guru gave him one final koan.
But instead of another deep doctrinal truth, Tilopa slapped Naropa across his face with a muddy sandal. In that precise moment of impact, Naropa's conceptual, over-thinking mind was utterly shattered. The shock stopped his thoughts instantly and was in a state of unobstructed awareness. He finally experienced the MahaMudra (the 'Great Seal' of the true nature of reality).
Tilopa left us with Six Words of Advice, or 'Six Nails' that can shift our awareness.
The Chant
Mi Mno - No Recall
Mi Bsam - No Image
Mi Sems - No Thought
Mi Dypod - No Analysis
Me Sgom - No Judge
Rang Bap Zhak - Self settles as it is
An Analogy
Think of our ability to form judgements, do analysis, recall, and make projections like premade furniture in the room of our mind. The Judgement is a throne, Analysis is a couch, Thoughts come from a projector, and Recall comes from an album on the coffee table. These are pre-established furniture pieces where a memory from the album is projected onto your inner room wall, judgements are formed about it and an analysis is done, which then form attachments about this projection.
These attachments and judgements then cause the mind suffering. The Mind's Room quickly becomes cluttered, heavy, and uncomfortable to exist in. These are the mechanics of the mind. You can remove this furniture by shifting your awareness. Use the chant to picture a room without these pieces. Non-judgement, non-analysis, non-recollection, non-projection. Drop these to exist in a natural state of being without them in the Mind's Room.
Once the mind is clear, then you can consciously step into the Heart Room and bring in entirely new furniture. The Seat of Compassion. The Seat of Loving-kindness. This further shifts your inner world where you can view through the windows of the Mind (your two eyes) from the Seat of Compassion and Loving-kindness.
I vocalized and recorded this Mahamudra Chant with Tilopa's words. I hope it helps you on your journey today.
With Love,
