Personal Development Books
This is a list of books most of which that I have personally read and implemented. A couple of these have been recommended to me enough that I have purchased them but have yet to finish. A lot of these I’ve read alongside my coworkers while I was working at Everlight Solar, and have had great conversations about the books, stories, principles, and effective implementation. Leave a comment if you have any questions or curiosities on these books or just want to talk about resources you’ve found helpful yourself!
•Can’t Hurt Me by David Goggins
Explores the power of will to transform and save the individual. A real story of a man who comes from a childhood of death, abuse, and isolation, and transforms his life to become a navy seal and a top tier long distance runner.
•The Strangest Secret and This I Believe by Earl Nightingale and Vic Conant
A short story of principle, exploring what it is that the top 5 percent of people do to become successful. (Highly recommended, highest ROI book.)
•Atomic Habits by James Clear
Gives short stories and practical step by step guides on how to build and keep useful habits whether daily, weekly, or yearly.
•The Confident Mind by Dr. Nate Zinsser
(Still currently reading)
Dr zinsser believes there is one trait necessary for success, confidence, and he shows you how to believe in yourself and create confidence through a step-by-step guide.
•Chop Wood Carry Water by Joshua Medcalf
A fictional story of a boy wanting to become a samurai archer, he is taught and guided by his sensei through a decade long path to mastery. Sensei’s principles and ideas will help you achieve through whatever goal it is you’re trying to achieve.
•Winning by Tim S. Grover and Sheri Wenk
I had an amazing opportunity to meet up and talk with Tim in Madison Wisconsin. He is the real deal. He has been a personal trainer for many great Athletes, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Dwayne Wade, ect. He breaks down winning, talks about it almost like a spirit or a person, and uses real life stories and examples to explain exactly what it takes to win at the highest level.
•The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey
This is a book that will follow you for life. It may be the most value-dense literature I’ve ever read. It will give you first a principle, and then a story to include the principle, and then examples of how to implement. Principles that will help you in all aspects of life from relationships, to career, to parenting, managing your time, financial, ect, A must read.
•The Obstacle Is the Way by Ryan Holiday
A book about stoicism, I dare say the best book about stoicism. This book preaches a mindset, one of the ancient stoics but put into modern context from an amazing author. The main idea is that every obstacle is an opportunity for growth, how to control your emotions when facing challenges, and to even get excited when challenges arise.
One of my favorites.
•12 Rules for Life and 12 More Rules for Life by Jordan Peterson
Jordan Peterson was a clinical psychologist for many years, he possesses immense wisdom from his studies and experience with clients with real problems. This book, 12 Rules for Life, and his sequel, 12 More Rules for Life, are a collective of wisdom that can help anyone find meaning in their lives. He uses personal stories, book references, ancient texts, and stories from his clients to express his “rules” aka principles. (One that I recommend to my family and closest friends)
•Pound the Stone by Joshua Medcalf
I highly recommend reading Chop Wood Carry Water before Pound the Stone. This book expands on the teachings in Chop Wood Carry Water, although it’s not necessary by any means. This book follows a trouble highschool basketball player who must sell books door to door over summer to get a chance to play basketball again. He is guided by the wisdom of a janitor. A janitor who has a secret life of success. The teachings of the janitor can again be applied to any pursuit of your own, for me I was doing door to door sales at the time of reading the book and found it to be an incredible benefit to my income.
Please recommend any more books that can be helpful, I’m always reading and always looking for a good book!
