Three days ago Anthropic released the most powerful AI ever made available to the public. Today the US government took it back. Here is exactly what happened: At 5:21pm ET today the US government issued an export control directive to Anthropic citing national security authorities. The order: suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for any foreign national whether inside or outside the United States including foreign national employees at Anthropic itself. Because Anthropic cannot separate foreign nationals from the rest of its user base in real time the result is a complete global shutdown. Everyone lost access. Not just foreign users. Everyone. Here is why the government did it: Someone discovered a method to jailbreak Fable 5 and shared it with the government. The government decided this was a national security threat and ordered the shutdown before Anthropic could respond. Here is what Anthropic actually said: They reviewed the jailbreak report. They believe the same capability is already available in GPT-5.5 and other models. They disagree with the decision. They are working to restore access as fast as possible.
