I was on the FBC Sales Huddle call with Jason Economides, and the advice I got from Jasons guidance gave me clarity of a direct pathway - Jason your advice was worth more than gold to me, thanks! So I started with explaining a process that I have been using to get clients i came up with last semester and since the new sememter is about to start, ASU is starting up thier weekly pich sessions.
I needed advice on a clear path forward since I know more now than I knew last semester.
So Jason and I started mapping out a campaign I can use when ASU’s fall entrepreneurship programs begin in a couple weeks..
But dont get it twisted, this is not about marketing to college students.
If you didn't already know, universities get millions of dollars in funding from the government to spur entrepreneurship in the community and these programs are full university based programs - for FREE.
Universities offer programs for local business owners and early-stage entrepreneurs in the community.
These programs include the following at no charge:
• Business training
• Pitch competitions
• Mentorship
• Grants and funding
• Investor events
• Weekly founder meetups
• The ability to use their facilities for your live events
The business owners in these rooms are already taking action. They already have a business that they are generating income from or they have a product, service, app, or business idea.
They are working on their pitch, looking for funding, and trying to explain how they will attract customers and make sales.
I have been part of the ASU entrepreneurship community for several years and have made several posts in the community sharing my journey.
During the spring program, I attended weekly pitch events and listened closely to what each business owner needed.
At the end of each pitch they are asked what is it that they needed from the community and one need came up again and again:
“I need help with marketing - getting more people to know about my business and buy from me.”
I quickly started to see that this was where the opportunity was and I am geering up to "run it" again this semester, but I know more than I knew 6 monthis ago.
Here is a quick framework of what I would do at the weekly Pitch In contest:
- I would go to the weekly PitchIN contest and record the full session.
- Then I would take the transcript from the session and run it through Chatgpt. I also created a prompt that would pull out a S.W.O.T. analysis from the transcript for each of the 5 contestants.
- That report would give insights, provide positioning and messaging, and would suggested an offer for each of the 5 presenters.
- The ASU Edson E & I has an online community where the replays of the pitch contest are placed and the business owners contact informmation was there.
- I would contact that person by email to build a relationship and and get them to a call.
Jason helped me to see that I should not just attend these events. I can create a simple campaign that supports the founders before and after they pitch.
So I am putting together a plan to offer the presenters and business owners in these meetings a free strategy session and page rebuild concept that helps them to look better in front of the investors that they are pitching to.
This strategy session and the page will clearly show:
• Who they help
• What problem they solve
• Why their solution matters
• How they plan to attract customers
• How they will turn attention into leads and sales
• How they plan to use their marketing budget
This gives them something useful for their pitch and opens the door to a real strategy conversation and gives them a page they can proudly use in their slide deck for the investors who are hearing their pitches in the future.
Here is the quick-win strategy you can use get clients from your local University based entreprenurship programs:
- Search for entrepreneurship programs at major universities near you.
- Look for programs that serve local business owners, not specifically and only for the students.
- Attend their pitch events, workshops, and networking events. They are free and I learn some awesome stuff for my own business too.
- Listen for business owners who need help with messaging, leads, sales, appointments, or follow-up.
- Record the session and use the transcript to get insights and ideas for the perfect offer to help them
- Offer one small solution that helps them solve an urgent problem.
- Use that quick win to start a conversation about the full system they need and you will build for them.
- Collect your MONEY!
- Overdeliver on the fulfillment
You don't have to keep chasing cold leads anymore.
Your next clients may already be gathering inside a university, nonprofit, chamber, or community based entrpeneurship program near you.
The clients you are seeking to serve are in the room. We just need the right offer and a clear plan to serve them.
I will continue sharing updates as I build and test this ASU Funnel Lab campaign throughout the fall semester.
Does a university near you offer entrepreneurship programs for local business owners?
